Our Coffee Commitment

Creating environmental, social and financial sustainability is at the core of everything we do.

 We roast coffee with a greener future in mind. The impact of climate change is intensifying at a rate never seen before by farming communities. We need to create strong, adaptable, and resilient coffee communities that benefit the supply chain throughout. 

The threat that climate change has on our planet has made us question what sort of future we would like to create. At Big Dog we are continuously trying to become more conscious about our impact on the environment as coffee roasters and as humans in general. We aim to reduce our carbon footprint at the roastery by;

  • Using as little plastic as possible. We have adopted a zero-waste system when delivering to our local wholesale partners. We deliver in refillable tubs instead of using 1KG bags.
  • We dispose of our coffee grounds to local gardens and community projects.
  • We use locally sourced milk from ‘The Littlest Dairy’, Blackwood.
  • Our furnishings in the roastery are made from local wood and our grandfather, has made everything from scratch.
  • We recycle our hessian sacks to businesses for upholstery for furniture or turning into canvases.

Looking after our local environment and keeping the surrounding areas clean is a priority of ours. Hannah has recently become a ‘Litter Champion’ for Blaenau Gwent. Keep a look out on our socials for any upcoming events that you could become involved in.

 

Ethically Sourced Coffee

Ethics in practice; commitment to fairness, continuous development and growing a unified coffee community within a vast industry. As independent roasters, our beliefs are fundamentally supported with a producer focused procurement.

In short, ethics are facilitated by relationships and trust. All our green coffee beans are procured via direct or fair-trade certified importers. All of which are Rainforest Alliance and UTZ certified. Specialty coffee is a community of growers, exporters, importers, roasters, independent cafes and consumers striving for quality; achieved through connection.
