Specialty coffee represents the pinnacle of quality, accounting for only the a small percentage of coffee grown globally. To earn this title, beans must achieve a score of 80 or above on the 100-point scale set by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). This score is awarded by certified Q Graders who evaluate the beans for clarity, sweetness, and complexity—ensuring that every bag you buy is free from defects and full of character.
The difference comes down to three things: quality, transparency, and time.
Most supermarket coffee is 'commodity grade'—bought in massive volumes and roasted very dark to hide defects and staleness.
